The Appointment Itself: A Timeline

The application process involves your colorist sectioning the hair and working methodically through it, applying lightener in sweeping motions and leaving sections open rather than wrapped in foil. This open-air application is part of what creates balayage's characteristic soft, diffused effect — the lightener processes in contact with air rather than in a controlled foil environment, which naturally softens the edges of each lightened section.
After the lightener processes, it is thoroughly rinsed and your colorist will typically apply a toner to refine the tone, eliminate any brassiness, and create that polished, finished look. The toning step is what takes balayage from raw and rough to the beautiful result you see in photos.
