You Got the Extensions. Now What? The Complete Guide to Maintaining Tape-Ins in Houston
Getting tape-in extensions is the easy part. Sitting in the chair while your stylist transforms your hair over the course of a few hours, watching your reflection shift from fine to full, from short to long — that is a genuinely wonderful experience, and the result tends to speak for itself.
What comes after is where many clients struggle. Extensions require a specific kind of attention that differs significantly from caring for natural hair, and the consequences of neglect are more immediate and more visible. In Houston's climate, where heat and humidity accelerate almost every hair challenge, the need for proper maintenance is even more acute.
Here is what your extension care routine should actually look like.
The Foundation: How You Wash Matters More Than What You Use
Washing tape-in extensions incorrectly is the fastest way to compromise their adhesion and shorten their lifespan. The cardinal rule is to wash vertically — that is, with your head upright rather than flipped upside down — and to work products through the hair in downward strokes rather than circular or scrubbing motions.
The tape bonds sit approximately an inch from the scalp. Circular scrubbing motions, vigorous towel-rubbing, and upside-down washing all place mechanical stress on those bonds and on the natural hair surrounding them. Over time, this stress causes slippage, tangling at the bond, and in extreme cases, premature shedding.
Use a sulfate-free, extension-safe shampoo — sulfates weaken the adhesive that holds tape bonds in place — and apply conditioner only from the mid-shaft down, keeping it well clear of the bonds themselves.
Detangling: The Non-Negotiable
Extensions must be detangled daily, without exception. Hair that is allowed to mat at the bond attachment points can cause matting in your natural hair as well, and in severe cases this requires cutting rather than combing out.
Begin at the ends and work upward in small sections, using a wide-tooth comb or a loop brush specifically designed for extensions. This is not a place to rush. Two minutes of careful detangling in the morning is incomparably preferable to the alternative.
Houston-Specific Considerations: Heat and Pool Season
Houston's heat means that clients with extensions sweat at the scalp more than they might in a cooler climate. This is completely normal and manageable, but it does require attentiveness. Salt from perspiration can accumulate at the bond area over time and, combined with product buildup, can weaken adhesion and cause a specific kind of tangling at the attachment point.
A scalp-focused cleanse — using fingertip pressure at the bond area during washing, rather than scrubbing — addresses this effectively. During the height of summer, clients who exercise frequently or spend significant time outdoors may need to wash more frequently than the twice-weekly schedule typically recommended for extension maintenance.
Pool season deserves special mention. Chlorinated water and tape-in extensions are a poor combination — chlorine weakens adhesive bonds significantly. If you plan to swim, braid or loosely pin your hair up and out of the water, rinse immediately after swimming, and be prepared for a shortened extension lifespan during pool season regardless of your precautions.
The Move-Up Appointment: Do Not Skip It
Tape-in extensions require a move-up appointment every six to eight weeks as your natural hair grows. This is not optional — it is structurally necessary. As the natural hair grows, the bond migrates away from the scalp, and the weight of the extension section is increasingly borne by a smaller section of hair. Left too long, this can cause breakage and matting that is genuinely difficult to address.
At your move-up appointment, the extensions are removed with a bond-releasing solution, your natural hair is thoroughly conditioned, and the extensions are re-applied with fresh tape at the new root position. High-quality extension hair can typically withstand three to four re-applications before it needs to be replaced.
When to Come In Between Appointments
If you notice a bond that has slipped and is sitting visibly away from your natural hair, a section that feels matted at the root, or extensions that are tangling persistently despite proper care — come in rather than wait for your scheduled appointment. These are situations where prompt attention prevents small problems from becoming larger ones.
